Introduction

More Info

Mafatihu al-Jenan (meaning keys to the heavens) is the name of the most common prayer book among Shiites, authored by Sheikh Abbas Qomi (1294-1359 AH). This book is a collection of prayers, supplications, pilgrimages, practices for the days of the year and month, and religious customs, which were narrated from the Prophet of Islam, Shia imams, and scholars. The author of Mofatih has taken many parts of this book from previous books such as Iqbal Seyyed Ibn Tavus and Musbah Kafami and Zad al-Maad Allameh Majlisi. The texts of prayers and pilgrimages are written in Arabic and the author has given Persian explanations at the beginning of some prayers. Mufatih was published in Mashhad in 1344 AH and became popular in a short time. This book is found in the homes and blessed places of Shiites in Iran and is often the only source that many Shiites of the world refer to for good deeds and on religious occasions. The most famous translation of it into Persian is by Mehdi Elahi Qomshei. Muhaddith Qomi added the book of Al-Baqiyat al-Salahat to Mufatih with the same theme of supplications, pilgrimages and prayers, which is included in the margins of Mufatih in most versions. Two books, Mufatih Navin and Minhaj al-Hayya, have been published with the aim of documenting and the book Mufatih al-Hayya with the motive of completing Mufatih al-Janaan. Several summaries of Mufatih have been published under different names.
