Introduction

More Info

This English-Persian Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms contains about 6500 entries. Though some terms are defined briefly, at this stage, it is only a lexicon; i.e; a book of financial and investment words in English with their equivalents in Persian. Although written for people active in the financial markets, the dictionary includes rich content for the wider audience of financial students and learners, the translators, interpreters, and people in the industry. It is prepared for all Persian speaking communities, including those born in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. For each English term in this bilingual specialized English-Persian dictionary, only one equivalent Persian terms were provided. If a term is used in different segments of the financial industry and may have a different meaning when used in various contexts, alternative Persian equivalents are offered. Where the term involves several meanings, it may be a composite of reference to two or more Persian equivalents rather than a reference to a single Persian word. Although the proposed Persian terminologies are not officially adopted by any Iranian authorities, the authors have preferred to give priority to the Persian equivalents used in the text of regulations, even if considered inferior to their favorite terms. Where Persian terms were representing the consensus of industry professionals, the authors have applied them with almost no exception. Finding proper Persian equivalents for English phrasal verb in this specialized bilingual English-Persian financial dictionary has been specifically a difficult task. We have tried to deal with the difficulty of EPVs and work them out individually and create Persian equivalents for them which we hope to be accurate enough. This was preferable to skip over these words. It was the year 2006 when the work started. When the two authors undertook to work on the book, Abdollah Kowsari, as the editor, agreed to assist in reading the book for an improvement in equivalent Persian terms. The authors had been well aware that already there existed some books on the subject, and went through them carefully. Examining those dictionaries in Persian, our observation showed that instead of exhibiting an enlarged and comprehensive view of the issue, those productions were imperfect, according to the very circumscribed plan which their authors had adopted. The authors of this book have endeavored, to the best of their judgments, to digest and methodize whatever appeared loose or inaccurate therein. From the first days, this Dictionary was available online. In this way, we let readers know of recent new entries, updates, or revisions by reviewing a newsletter that appeared at the site. The attractive feature of publishing a www book is to make it a dynamic book. The readers do not have to wait until the next edition comes out to change things. We can change things every day. We can add entries, correct errors, and make other modifications at will. Considering the quality of the Dictionary and its probable usefulness to financial circles in Persian speaking counties, a few new editions received permission to be printed for circulation. If we can update the book to contain new entries, the demand for the new editions of the Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms will remain strong, attesting to the need for such a reference in the financial industry. It is expected that the dynamism of the financial industry would cause the Dictionary to become outdated over time. Growth and change in the industry will necessitate modifications in the definitions of some terms and the addition of many others. We recognize this as a limitation of any dictionary. We are not here to claim that the listing is complete even with all our endeavors for making this edition complete. No dictionary of a living tongue like Farsi ever can be perfect. Our purpose is to produce a comprehensive dictionary that will be particularly useful to the students and working financial analysts and financial managers in Iran; thus, we hope that the ongoing editions can be published in the future to cover more financial entries. The website, like the original book form, will be intended as a reference to the formal terms (the technical jargon) used in describing and teaching financial vocabularies. If you find an error or believe that something could be expressed more clearly, please contact the authors. We hope to receive many e-mailed comments, suggestions, and criticisms from our readers. By that, we can add many new entries to this version. Thanks to our watchful readers, numerous errors also will be corrected. After reviewing your comments and suggestions, we will immediately modify our online version and publish adjusted bounded copies of the Dictionary from time to time. Many friends and colleagues have so much to add to the book. People like the dear departed Mr. Alimadad (for accounting terms) and Dr. Mohammad Tabibian (for economic terms) have vastly been conferred with. Unstintingly, many have given us help and advice. By generously putting at our disposal their vocabularies, many new and old colleagues and many of our new and old students offered us their guidance. We are deeply indebted to them. We are also deeply indebted to Azadeh Nazarboland for her help to arrange a thorough bibliography. We wish too to thank Ms. Fakhri Tahmasebi and Mr. Mohsen Alizadeh for their work in setting up a very complicated text. To Mr. Khashayar Ghadirinezhad for his new version of the electronic edition and to Ms. Zahra Sarfarazi for adding new entries to the text, we owe a debt of gratitude. We again request users of this dictionary to reproach us freely if they feel our Farsi equivalents are inadequate, inaccurate, or absent. We understandably want to make any future versions more useful.
