In Salem's Lot, in the south of Maine, the local R.T. Straker hires two men to bring a heavy crate to the basement of the Mansion Marsten. What they do not know is that the vampire Kurt Barlowis inside the box. Meanwhile, the writer Ben Mears returns to his hometown Salem's Lot after many years in New York City to research the Mansion Marsten. He befriends and dates the local Susan Norton, who lives in Boston but returned to the town since her father was very sick and died, and now she is spending a period giving support to her mother. The friends Mark Petrie, Danny Glick and his brother Ralphie are at Mark's house, who is a newcomer in town. When the brothers return home, they walk along an isolated path and Straker kidnaps Ralphie for Barlow. Soon the boy turns into a vampire and attacks his brother Danny that attacks the gravedigger Mike Ryerson, in the beginning of a vampire spree at Jerusalem's Lot.
