Hearts is the classic card game where everyone plays for themselves and nobody wants the

points: every heart costs you one, and the Queen of Spades thirteen. When someone reaches

the target, the lowest score wins.

♥ THE REAL RULES

• Pass three cards before every hand: left, right, across, then a hand with no pass.

• The two of clubs leads, and no points may fall on the first trick.

• Hearts can't be led until one has been played. The Queen of Spades can be led anytime.

• Cards the rules don't allow stay dimmed, so you never misplay by accident.

• Shoot the moon: take every heart and the Queen in one hand, and everyone else takes it all.

• Play to 100, or to 50 for a quicker game.

• The 40-point table: the Ace of Hearts is 11 and the Queen of Spades 17, to 100 or 200.

• The Jack of Diamonds: whoever takes it gets 10 points off.
