Ben 10: Omniverse is an action beat ’em up video game based on the “Ben 10” animated series, released in November 2012. The Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, and PS3 versions were developed by Vicious Cycle Software, while the DS and 3DS versions were developed by 1st Playable Productions.
The story begins when the Omnitrix malfunctions, causing Rook Blonko, Ben’s new partner, to travel back in time and meet the 11-year-old version of Ben. Together, they face a villain named Malware, who absorbs Rook’s Proto-Tool, gaining incredible power and creating a dangerous alternate timeline. Young Ben, Teen Ben, and Rook must work together to save both the past and present and defeat Malware.
Gameplay allows control of Ben (either Teen or Young version) and, in co-op mode, Rook as the second player. Rook uses the Proto-Tool to create various weapons. The game features over 15 playable aliens and environments such as the underground city “Undertown.” There are 11 stages in the main console versions and 18 stages in the DS/3DS versions.
Game systems include a health bar, an Omnitrix/Proto-Tool power bar, an XP bar for upgrading abilities, save points, boss fights with Quick-Time Events, and an Extras section for entering special cheat codes. In co-op mode, if one player dies, they respawn after a few seconds.
Key features include single-player and co-op modes, the ability to switch between Teen and Young Ben, the use of Rook’s tools, and faithful design to the animated series. The game was praised for its graphics and story atmosphere but criticized for repetitive gameplay and linear level design.
